Understand the definitions for different formula options available to calculate OEE

Guidewheel production settings for OEE

Although the fundamental OEE formula (OEE = Availability * Performance * Quality) remains the same, there are numerous permutations and combinations that can be employed to calculate it. Various factors, such as the manufacturing process, product type, or industry, may influence these calculations. At Guidewheel, we strive to cater to our clients' unique needs, which is why we offer a wide range of options for each element of the OEE calculation. Outlined below are the various options available to choose from -

Definitions

Runtime - Only the time a machine is running. Excludes any idle (when machine is idling between runs and not producing) and offline time (when machines are offline drawing less than 5 kW of energy, which signifies time when it is powered off.) Runtime would automatically exclude any downtime that falls in the idle or offline groups.

Up-time - Runtime+Idle time. Only excludes offline time as downtime.

Scheduled time - This is the time scheduled or time that is expected to take for an order to be completed. This is the time between the Start Time of the production run and the End time. For example: If a production run covers a shift that starts at 6:00 and ends at 14:00. The scheduled time is 8 hours.

Planned Downtime - Since teams should not be penalized for time they were not expected to be in production for various reasons like scheduled breaks/lunches, or planned maintenance etc, the option to reduce any planned downtime is available from the availability calculation. This doesn’t include any unplanned downtime that can happen during a production run.

Definitions

Performance based on cycles - the Performance variable in OEE is calculated only with Cycles data, by comparing the Average Cycle Time to the Standard Cycle Time. For example, a machine running at 34s average cycle time with a Standard of 30s would have a 88% Performance value.

Good Production = This is the actual production quantity captured in the “Production Qty” field. These are units produced that are fit to sell (typically this is a first pass quality measurement).

Total Production = “Production Qty” + “Waste Qty”. This refers to the Total units produced, including ones that are not of good quality.

Production 1 Fixed Target = This is the production target quantity entered in the production entry in the “Production Target” field.

Good Production Actual Speed = “Production Qty” / “Scheduled time”. This is a calculation of the speed of the production quantity entered in the production entry in the “Production Qty” field. The speed is calculated by dividing “Production Qty” by the “Scheduled time” of that production entry. For example, an 8 hour production entry had a “production Qty” of 80 units, its speed is 80/8 or 10 units/hr.

Total Production Actual Speed = Similar to good production actual speed the total production actual speed includes “Production Qty” + “Waste Qty“ divided by the “Scheduled time”.

Production 1 Normal Speed - For machines that are not cycles based and run on a standard for # of units that can be produced in an hour or day, the option of normal speed is used.

Production refers to the good production quantity reported in the production quantity field.

Production + Waste refers to the total production quantity produced.
